Saddletight: Many Horses in the Stable

Under a plankton
ceiling a nameless cowboy
cinema star drowns
me in haymounts
and barndust. Outside, I am
tied up as his boot breaks
call me by my saltlick name.
Twenty-eight years between
us — the Japanese
Cherries he’s planted, the glowing
sugarcane mane.
Somewhere, a Ferris wheel holds
our spot, the suede-chapped
stirrups, the gulls poke-
pecking a man’s sickness.
Eating him whole,
the wheatfields bow gloriously down.
