To write at sunset

is to join with the sun in losing
something you have to give

like the heat written on the earth
so too words planted on the page

to write at sunset is not to mind
the smear of ink upon your palm

for it has the thin line of watercolor against the sky
to look up to

the blue that’s turned to dark purple as it dries

to write at sunset is to marvel
at how man’s stars turn on before the rest
and drown them out
